The New York Foundation for the Arts and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, as well as teams of smaller cultural groups in DUMBO and East Harlem, are among the recipients of a total of $100,000 in grant money from the New York City Economic Development Corporation, officials are expected to announce today.
The grants are part of a series of city-funded efforts to assist New York's artistic community during the recession. The package of initiatives, executed with cooperation from the Department of Cultural Affairs, was announced by Mayor Bloomberg in September.
"We had been speaking to the industry and to the Department of Cultural Affairs, and thinking about what we could do from an economic development perspective," said Teresa Vazquez, director of the development corporation's nonprofit group. "As the city, we have an interest in people going to visit various boroughs and neighborhoods, and arts organizations are the fabric of that."
The grants to NYFA and LMCC, totaling $50,000, will fund two professional-development "boot camps" for New York City artists. The programs, known as "Artist as Entrepreneur," will offer financial, marketing and management training. For the full article, click here
